Indigenous People’s Day will be a day of recognition for not only Native American History but for the continued existence of Native Americans and their tribes in the united states. Many American’s do not acknowledge the many Native American’s still residing in our country and an indigenous people’s day would force them to recognize their presence. The government also does not pay much attention to the tribes and a day dedicated to them could help to force the government to correct past injustices that the government has inflicted on tribes. In addition, an indigenous People’s day could help to shed light on the current social issues and injustices that tribes experience. Hopefully, by bringing awareness of these issues to the American people there will be a larger effort to help correct these wrong doings. The difficulty is going to be making sure indigenous people’s day is not just treated as a Monday that we do not have school, but no one cares why. Also, it could be used to help prevent children from learning the fabricated native American history that we all learned growing up. In schools, they usually dedicate a day to learn about Columbus around colobus day. This day could now be used to learn the correct history of Native American’s and about their status in our country now. An indigenous people’s day would help to inform Americans about Native Americans. Many Americans do not feel comfortable around native Americans, as native’s culture and their way of life can seem very foreign to American people. And, even if people do know about their culture many times they feel uncomfortable being around Native Americans because of the harm their ancestors caused the native. A day dedicated to indigenous people would help to make people more informed as well as more comfortable with Native Americans We need an indigenous people’s day to acknowledge the large role that Native Americans have played throughout our country's history, their continued existence within our borders, and the social and environmental issues tribes face everyday.
